When GreenGuy found out that a favorite author, Tim Green, had not one, but two new books out, we had to drop everything and go get them! I'm always happy to see my see my son reading and enjoying his books because as I've said before, he's such a positive role model.
Rivals: A Baseball Great Novel (Baseball Greats), by Tim Green was at the library. The other, The Big Time: A Football Genius Novel, we had to drive to the bookstore for. Boy, was it worth it! GreenGuy wasted no time, and finished both books in one day. It was a perfect way to end the summer.
While we were at the library, we checked on another favorite author, Gordon Korman. It turns out he had also released a football-related book within the past year. So, the next day, my son picked up Pop, and once again couldn't put it down. It just so happens he's starting a new school this year, just like the main character of this book.
There was another book by this author that we picked up, but I'll tell you about it another day. It's not too sports-related, but it does have to do with the social complexities of middle school. So, just like the above books, it's perfect for the 10 to 14 age range.
The tween and teen years are awkward for most of us, and reading realistic fiction (even if it's not always that realistic) should make those years a little easier to get through. When children can relate to book characters, it's like they have friends who are going through similar experiences. Book characters tell it all, in a way that most real life friends do not - and make you think about what it would be like to walk in their shoes.
I wish your children a great school year, and that they manage to find time to read some books. Not just for class, but just for the fun of it!
