I'm taking a much needed break from technology during these last two weeks of the year, and I'm reevaluating my role as a blogger and literacy advocate. I'm not sure where 2010 will take me, but there is one thing that I am certain of: I will find new ways to support literacy and learning during the coming months.
Many of us supported a variety of causes this year, and especially during the past couple of weeks. My two main causes are ones that I believe go hand-in-hand: literacy and the environment. Each of these causes affects not just one group of people, but ALL of us. We ALL need to be literate, and to breathe clean air, and to drink pure water.
If you've been reading this blog regularly, you share my love of children's literature, reading, and literacy. You read to yourself and to your children on a regular basis. That's why I'm sure it upsets you to hear about children who do not have access to books, or parents or caregivers who can read to them. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing to act like an anonymous "angel of reading" to a child or family in need?
If you have access to a computer or The UPS Store or Mail Boxes Etc., donating books to those less fortunate has never been easier. With as little as one dollar, you can donate a book to a child in need through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.
So, the holidays may be drawing to a close, but literacy is a cause which needs to be supported every minute, every hour, and every day of every year. As parents, we can support it in our own homes; but why not take it a step further by inspiring our children to help others? After all, even a child can donate a few quarters. What a great way to help your child to not only become a bucket filler, but to develop empathy as well.

Here's to finding new ways to share our love of reading and learning in 2010 and beyond...
Happy New Year!
