The power of a football and a field of green...
In honor of the first night of NFL football, and my son's first youth game this Sunday, I'd like to share a few football related children's books today.
When I first started this blog, I wrote about how much GreenGuy loved Football Genius, by Tim Green. The author played in the NFL, and is a powerful role model for children in so many ways. His book reflects a true love and knowledge of the game that I think any football fan would truly appreciate. To find out more about Tim Green and his writing, please watch this video and take a look at his web site.
GreenGuy was so excited to read the recently released sequel, Football Champ, and it certainly did not disappoint him! It was another book that he couldn't put down until it was finished. I'm hoping he'll write a more detailed review for you sometime soon. It's not easy to find the time during football season!
I haven't read either of these books yet, but they're on my list. While Football Genius is listed as a YA book on Amazon, Football Champ is listed as appropriate for ages 9 to 12. I'm not sure why, but my guess is that they figured out that the books mainly appeal to the 10 to 14 age range. They're both on my list to read, so hopefully I'll get to them soon...
A great picture book for all ages of elementary school football fans (and parents and grandparents, too!) is Phil Bildner's The Greatest Game Ever Played. When a boy's favorite baseball team moves to California, he opens his eyes to the game of football. The illustrations really bring this story of the NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants to life. Fans of Johnny Unitas will especially enjoy this book. An afterword explains how pro football became so popular.
Books like these can turn reluctant readers into avid readers. When children find books that match their interests, it's often all they need to become motivated. All it takes is some time, effort, and a library card.
There are books out there for EVERY type of reader. You just have to find them! So, if you love to watch sports with your children, why not share some related books as well? It's a great way to spend quality time together, without spending a lot of money.
Would you like to recommend any other football related children's books?
