So many topics, so little time....I apologize for not providing you with many book suggestions this week, but I will surely have many for you next week!
This morning, I had a few different directions I could have gone in, but then I found a blog post that I just couldn't ignore. I haven't posted anything in my "Healthy, Green Families" category in quite a while, and this blog post from Healthy Child, Healthy World really fits in with this aspect of my blog. It made me so angry when I read it that I felt compelled to address it today.
The article, "Industry Will Pay Big Bucks for Pregnant Women Willing to Ingest BPA," by Janelle Sorensen, is what I believe to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the lengths companies are willing to go to in order to protect the bottom line. Instead of finding innovative ways to improve how they do business, these individuals spend a significant amount of time and money on fighting to maintain poor, outdated, ill-conceived practices. The ignorance and apathy of these powerful individuals is the single largest threat to us all.
"We may have found a cure for most evils; but we have found no remedy for the worst of them all, the apathy of human beings." ~Helen Keller
What will it take for certain individuals to realize that in polluting our planet, they are only hurting themselves? It makes me think of the picture book, The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. How much can we take from the Earth and each other before nothing is left?
As far as I am concerned, we should all live by the quote that Seventh Generation writes on its product labels:
"In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." ~From the Great Law of The Iroquois Confederacy
The good news is that an increasing number of companies are adopting this philosophy. So, in addition to using our voices to speak out against companies which may not have our best interests at heart, we need to seek out and support companies that do.
It's time to flex those strong consumer muscles! Every dollar you and I spend is a message sent to corporations around the world. It's the informed choices we make every day that will make the world a healthier, greener place for us all. So please, make your choice your voice!
What kinds of informed choices have you made recently? Is there a certain "green" company or healthy product that you'd like to recommend?
