Some families will be celebrating Father's Day from a distance next Sunday (June 21st) because one or both parents are fighting for our freedom. So, in honor of all of our military families, I'd like to share some books which will enlighten children and adults of all ages.
My Hero: Military Kids Write About Their Moms and Dads, by Allen Appel and Mike Rothmiller, is a truly inspirational collection of essays and artwork by children of military parents. Their honest and heartfelt words and pictures will touch people of all ages.
Two great picture books for military families to enjoy together are:
My Dad's a Hero, by Rebecca Christiansen and Jewel Armstrong, will help children to understand the military life of a father in a uniquely uplifting way.
Night Catch, by Brenda Erhmantraut, will comfort children (and their parents) by helping them to understand the parent/child connection that transcends time and space.
Here are two other related books that any dad might enjoy reading on his own:
Heroes Among Us: Firsthand Accounts of Combat From America's Most Decorated Warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan, edited by Major Chuck Larson.
Heroes Among Us: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Choices, by John Quinones.
There are many different kinds of heroes in this world, but military families make sacrifices every day that we may never hear or read about. So, this Father's Day, let's think about those who can't be together. Time away from loved ones is one of the greatest sacrifices anyone could ever make.
