The best teachers use music and books to spark meaningful discussions and to inspire students to become better people. These two simple tools have the power to change the lives of all kinds of people, especially mothers and their children. If you need a little inspiration today, I'd like to share a children's book and a song that recently popped back into my life after a long hiatus.
There are certain books that stay with you for life. That's why reading with your child is the greatest gift you could ever share with him or her. If there was a children's book that inspired this blog, it would be Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney. This picture book's illustrations and messages are so beautiful that you'll want to read this book again and again. It reminds us that we all need to find small ways to make the world a better place. All ages of children and adults will enjoy this book.
I don't watch much television, but this week an American Idol contestant, Kris Allen, sang a familiar Michael Jackson song, "Man in the Mirror." I haven't heard this song in ages, but it perfectly complements the theme of Miss Rumphius. As I was listening, I was thinking that the words should be, Mom in the Mirror. Even though moms are busier than ever, the small decisions we make on a daily basis really can change the world, one home at a time. If each of us makes a small effort each day to make more informed choices, we will collectively have a big impact upon the world.
As your child's first teacher, it's fun to read a great book and then link it somehow to the outside world. The best educators encourage students to connect books with other books, music, movies, everyday life, and current events. It's a great way to create a love of learning.
I hope you enjoy my first two recommendations. Maybe you'll take a trip to your local library to find Miss Rumphius, and other books by Barbara Cooney.
