In honor of Earth Day this week, here are some additional quotes by Rachel Carson:
“For the first time in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals, from the moment of conception until death.”
"It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know of wonder and humility."
“If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow.”
"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day."~E.B. White
Isn't that a great quote? I found it inside an Honest Tea bottle cap. I love the Black Forest Berry flavor the best. It has less sugar than most other teas, and comes in a glass bottle (the ones in the glass seem to taste better).
Since E.B. White is one of my favorite children's authors, I decided to look for some more of his quotes. Here are a few more (from Brainyquote.com) that I love:
"Life is always a rich and steady time when you are waiting for something to happen or to hatch." ~E.B. White, Charlotte's Web
With words like these, how could anyone ever say that children's books are only for children? I read Charlotte's Web
with my children when they were 5 and 3, and it's such a masterpiece that you take something special away from it no matter how old you are. It's one of those books that you have to read at least a few times during your lifetime. I hope to read it again this summer.
By the way, if you missed my previous Top 10 Ways to Raise an Avid Reader posts, you'll find that I mentioned this book within one of the tips. That's how much I love it!
"The way you overcome shyness is to become so
wrapped
up in something that you forget to be afraid. -
Lady Bird Johnson
"When you're worried, tell yourself the truth:
Shyness is a
strength
to build on, not a character flaw to be stamped out." - ``Shyness Is Not A Character Flaw" at the Malvern
School
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do"
- Eleanor Roosevelt
"To go against the dominant thinking of your friends,
of most of the
people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism
you
can perform." - Theodore H. White
